What type of transport do you travel with?

In the Netherlands, you can travel by different means of public transport.
Travelling by train is useful if you want to get from one city to another quickly, or if you want to travel long distances.
The bus usually runs at fixed times, according to a fixed route.
In the regions of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague you can travel by metro.
Trams run in and around major cities such as Amsterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, and Rotterdam.
If your destination is on the other side of a body of water, you can take a ferry. This is a boat that transports people, bicycles, and sometimes cars.
Shared bikes and shared scooters are useful for reaching your final destination if there is no public transport available.

You put a balance (an amount of money) on your OV-chipkaart.

Use a bank card or smartphone with which you can make contactless payments.

Single tickets

Buy a separate ticket at the service desk at the station, at a ticket machine, or on the bus and tram.
