Travelling by tram

In and around large cities, such as Amsterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and Rotterdam, you can travel by tram. The tram is perfect for short trips within and just outside the city. Trams travel on a fixed route and stop at tram stops.

How does travelling by tram work?

  1. Make sure you have a valid ticket – An e-ticket, an OV-chipkaart with credit, a single ticket, or a bank card or smartphone with OVpay.

  2. Check the information boards and screens – The information boards at the tram stop show the (final) destination of the tram. There are often also screens present inside the tram. You can also see all this information in the 9292 planner.

  3. Check in – Check in when you board the tram. Or at the card reader at the stop. Read all about checking in and out here.

  4. Press the stop button – Do you have to get off at the next stop? Press the stop button. This will let the driver know that the tram has to stop.

Please note: not every tram has stop buttons. Trams without stop buttons stop at every stop.

  5. Check out – Do not forget to check out when you leave the tram.

Where is the card reader for checking in and out?

Are you travelling with an OV-chipkaart or with OVpay? Do not forget to check in and out. In most cities, card readers are located next to the door inside of the tram. Are you travelling with the U-OV tram (Utrecht)? Then the card readers are located outside the tram, on the platform.

Tips for travelling by tram

  • Check the number on the tram – The number of the tram line is on the front, back, and side of the tram. The (final) destination of the tram is also stated. Check this number to make sure you get on the right tram.

  • Information screens on the tram – The tram often has an information screen inside which shows the next stop(s). This is often also announced on the speakers. This way, you know when your stop is coming up.

  • Plan your journey before departure – Plan your journey with the 9292 planner or in the 9292 app. This way, you know which route is the best for your journey.

  • Stay informed during your journey – With the 9292 app, you can also stay informed of delays and changes during your journey.

  • View the live location of the tram – In the 9292 app, you can view the live location of the train, bus, tram or metro. This way, you can see on the map where the vehicle is. This is useful if there is a delay, for example. Or if the screens in the vehicle are not working.
