Bikes on public transport
If your journey starts and ends by bike, it may be convenient to take your bike with you on public transport. A folding bike is often allowed. Different rules apply to a normal bike.
Bikes on the train
Want to take your bike on the train? You can! In most cases, you will need a bike day pass.
Bike day pass
NS sells a day pass for bikes. You can take a bike on the train with the day pass and a valid ticket for yourself if it is outside of peak times. This is allowed all day on weekends, and on weekdays between 09:00 and 16:00 and after 18:30.
This bike day pass is valid on trains from:
NS
Arriva
Blauwnet
This day pass is not valid on international trains.
Groningen and Friesland
Do you take your bike on an Arriva train in Groningen and/or Friesland? Then Arriva's own bike day pass is also an option.
Please note that this bike day pass is only valid on Arriva trains in Groningen and Friesland.
Folding bikes on the train
Small folding bikes are always allowed free of charge under the following conditions:
The folding bike is folded while boarding and travelling.
When folded, the bike should fall within the dimensions of 45 cm wide x 86 cm long x 80 cm high.
Is the folding bike larger than these dimensions? Then you need a bike day pass. The folding bike can then only be taken during off-peak hours.
Bikes on the bus and tram
In most cases, you are not allowed to take a bike on buses and trams. Do you have a folding bike? Then, it is allowed when the bike is folded.
Tip – Want to make sure your bike is allowed on the bus or tram? Check the operator's website.
RandstadRail by HTM
On HTM's RandstadRail (lines 3, 4 and 34), bikes are sometimes allowed on board for free. This is allowed all day on weekends, and after 19:00 on weekdays.
Bikes on the metro
The rules for taking your bike vary from one metro operator to another.
GVB metros (Amsterdam region)
GVB sells a day pass for bikes. You can take a bike on the metro with the day pass and a valid ticket for yourself if it is outside of peak times. This is allowed all day on weekends, and on weekdays before 07:00, between 09:00 and 16:00, and after 18:30.
RET metros (Rotterdam and The Hague region)
You can take your bike for free on RET metros outside of peak times. This is allowed all day on weekends, and on weekdays between 09:00 and 16:00 and after 18:30. Board the metro where the doors show a bike symbol. There is a dedicated space there for bikes.
Do you have a folding bike? When the bike is folded, you can always take it with you.
Please note – Is the metro crowded? RET employees may then indicate that the bike cannot be taken along.
