Travelling by metro
In the regions of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague, you can travel by metro. The metro generally covers large distances several times an hour, both above and below ground.
How does travelling by metro work?
The metro travels at fixed times along a fixed route. The metro stations are located along this route. The metro automatically stops at each stop along the route. You do not have to do anything to make the metro stop when you want to get off.
How to travel by metro
Make sure you have a valid ticket – An e-ticket, an OV-chipkaart with credit, a single ticket, or a bank card or smartphone with OVpay.
Check in – Check in at a card reader on the platform, or at the entrance gates to the station. Read all about checking in and out here.
Check the information boards and screens – The information boards and screens show the (final) destination of the metro. You can also see from which platform the metro departs. You can also see this in the 9292 planner.
Get off at your final destination – The screens on the metro show what the next stop is. This is often also announced on the speakers. This way, you know when to get off. Sometimes you have to press a button on the door to open it.
Check out – Have you arrived at your final station? Or do you have to transfer to another operator? Then do not forget to check out.
Tips for travelling by metro
Check the number on the metro – The number of the metro line is on the front and side of the metro. The (final) destination of the metro is also stated. Check this number to make sure you get on the right metro.
Information screens on the metro – The metro often has an information screen that shows you what the next stop is. This is also announced on the speakers. This way, you know when your stop is coming up.
Plan your journey before departure – Plan your journey with the 9292 planner or in the 9292 app. This way, you know which route is the best for your journey.
Stay informed during your journey – With the 9292 app, you can also stay informed of delays and changes during your journey.
View the live location of the tram – In the 9292 app, you can view the live location of the train, bus, tram, or metro. This way, you can see on the map where the vehicle is. This is useful if there is a delay, for example. Or if the screens in the vehicle are not working.
