Travelling with OVpay

With OVpay, you can check in and out on public transport using your bank card, credit card, or smartphone. For this, you need a bank card or smartphone that can make contactless payments.

What is OVpay?

OVpay is a way to pay contactless on public transport. Instead of using an OV-chipkaart, you check in and out with your bank card, credit card, or smartphone. The price of the travel will then be deducted directly from your bank account. This way, you do not have to think about whether you have enough balance on your OV-chipkaart.

Is my card suitable for OVpay?

The smartphone, bank card, or credit card you use for OVpay must have an NFC chip. That means it must be suitable for making contactless payments. Cards with an NFC chip can be recognised by the Wi-Fi icon on them. Read more about the conditions of contactless payments on your bank's website.

How travelling with OVpay works

  1. Check in using your contactless debit card, credit card, or smartphone.

  2. Are you getting off? Then you must check out using the same contactless payment method you checked in with.

  3. The price of the travel is automatically debited from your bank account. The next day, you will see the amount on your payment statement with the description NLOV.

Please note – Remove your debit card from your wallet when checking in and out. This way, you can be sure that you check in with the right pass and that you do not accidentally check in with two passes at the same time. Did this happen by accident anyway? Find out how to get your money back on the OVpay website.

How is the price of travel calculated?

OVpay prices are the same as OV-chipkaart prices when travelling in second class and without a discount or season ticket. Want to know how much your journey will cost? In the 9292 journey planner, you can see how much your journey should cost. Compare this price with the amount withdrawn from your account. It can sometimes take a day for the money to be withdrawn from your account.

Discounts and season tickets

With your OV-chipkaart, do you always travel with a discount or a season ticket? You might be able to put your season ticket or discount product on your debit card. Check the website of the operator you have your season ticket with. There, you will find the latest information.

Is OVpay secure?

OVpay is a secure way to pay on public transport. Any payment you make on public transport will be protected, just like with regular debit card payments.

You will recognise the OVpay payment on your bank statement by its description. It always starts with NLOV and then 14 digits. If you still think something is wrong, you can always contact your bank or OVpay customer service.

Keep this in mind when travelling with OVpay

  • Check-in and check-out for 1 person – You can check-in and check-out only for yourself. You cannot travel with several people on 1 pass.

  • Use the same pass when checking in and out – Always check out using the same pass or phone you checked in with.

  • Second class only – You can currently only travel second class with OVpay.

  • Discounts and season tickets – Currently, you can only travel at the full fare price on most operators. The operator's website will tell you whether you can also put your discount or season ticket on your bank card.

Cash back with OVpay

Did you miss your check-out? Or accidentally checked in with OVpay while trying to scan your e-ticket? Then you can claim your money back. You will recognise the payment from OVpay on your account by the statement with the reference 'NLOV' followed by 14 digits.

This is how you ask for your money back:

  1. Go to your travel overview on OVpay.nl/en

  2. Follow the step-by-step instructions.
