Travelling by ferry

Do you want to visit an island? Or do you have to cross a river or canal without a bridge? Then you can take a ferry. This is a boat that transports people, bicycles, and sometimes cars.

How does travelling by ferry work?

  1. Boarding – Go to the ferry departure point. When the boat arrives, wait until everyone is off the boat. Then you can board the boat.

  2. Valid ticket – Make sure you have a valid ticket.

  3. Final destination – Has the boat almost reached your (final) destination? This is often indicated by an announcement or sound signal.

  4. Disembarking – Has the ferry reached your (final) destination? Have you been told that you can disembark (either by announcement or sound signal)? Then you can disembark.

Please note – In stormy or freezing weather, the timetable is sometimes adjusted. Always check the 9292 planner before you leave.

How do you pay for the ferry?

How you can pay for your ticket differs per ferry and per operator. Always check the operator's website before you take the ferry. The website will explain how you can buy your ticket, and whether there are season tickets available.

  • Free – Some ferries are free. For example, some GVB ferries.

  • OVpay and OV-chipkaart – For some ferries, you can check in and out with OVpay orwith your OV-chipkaart. You check in and out on the dock, before you board the ferry.

  • Single ticket or e-ticket – Are you travelling on a boat for which you have to buy a single ticket? You often buy this on the dock, before you board. Or buy an e-ticket online.

  • Season ticket – Do you travel on the same ferry often? Then a season ticket can be useful. Check the operator's website to see if this is available.

Want to know which payment option applies to the ferry you are going to take? Check the website of the operator.

Tips for travelling by ferry

  • The direction and number of the ferry can be found on the board/screen or in the 9292 app. That way, you know you have found the right ferry.

  • There is no stop button on a ferry. The boat always stops.

  • Have you arrived at your destination? The footbridge is automatically folded out so you can get off.
