Travelling by shared bike or scooter

Shared bikes and shared scooters are useful for travelling in the city when you don't have a bike, your bike is broken, or if the walking distance is a bit too far. You can easily use them to get to your destination if there is no public transport.

What is a shared bike or shared scooter?

Shared bikes and shared scooters are used by many different users. This type of transport is especially popular in cities and is often used instead of cars and public transport.

These shared bikes and scooters (except for the OV-fiets) often have a lock that you unlock with an app on your smartphone. The app can be used to select, unlock, and pay for the bike or scooter. How much you pay for the ride varies per company. This is often calculated based on the number of minutes or days that you use the bike or scooter for.

Donkey Republic – Did you know that the (electric) shared bikes of Donkey Republic can also be rented and paid for in the 9292 app? Convenient, because then you don't need to download a separate app for it.

OV-fiets

OV-fiets is the bike sharing programme of NS. These bikes are often found at NS stations. Do you want to rent an OV-fiets? Then you need a personal OV-chipkaart with an OV-fiets season ticket on it. This season ticket is free. Read everything about the OV-fiets here.

How to find a shared bike or shared scooter in the 9292 app

In the 9292 app, you will find shared bikes and shared scooters from various companies. You can find shared bikes and shared scooters in the app in two different ways:

  • The planner – Plan the start or end of your journey with a shared bike or shared scooter.

  • Rent nearby – Find shared bikes and shared scooters near you. We explain how to do this below.

Find shared mobility nearby

  1. Open the 9292 app.

  2. Click on the menu icon at the top left of the home screen.

  3. Tap on 'Renting nearby'.

  4. Tap on 'Search location, address, etc.' at the top of the screen and enter the location where you would like to find a shared bike or shared scooter.

  5. Select 'Bikes', 'Electric Bikes', or 'Scooters' above the map based on your preference.

  6. Click on the icon on the map and you will get more information about the shared bike or shared scooter.

Do you want to use the shared bike or shared scooter on the map? How you can use it differs depending on the type of bike or scooter. Check the conditions on the website of the shared bike or shared scooter operator for the conditions.

Tip Are you zoomed out on the map? Then you won't see any shared bikes or shared scooters, even though there might be some nearby. So, make sure you are zoomed in far enough to see the shared bikes or shared scooters.

Start or end your journey with a shared bike or shared scooter

  1. Open the 9292 app.

  2. Plan your journey in the 9292 app by filling in your starting point and destination.

  3. Tap on 'Begin' or 'End' and tap on 'by bike', 'by electric bike', or 'by scooter'.

  4. If there are shared bikes or shared scooters in the area, this will be included in your travel advice.
