Travelling by bus

Travel from your starting point to your end point easily by bus. There are multiple bus operators in the Netherlands.

How does travelling by bus work?

The bus usually runs at fixed times along a fixed route. The bus stops are located along this route. You can get on and off at these bus stops.

Please note: some buses do not always travel. For example, they only come when you request them. This is called transport on request.

  2. Check the information boards and screens – The information boards and screens at the bus stop show the (final) destination of the bus. You can also see from which stop the bus departs. You can also see this in the 9292 planner.

Tips for travelling by bus

  • Check the number on the bus – The number of the bus line is on the front and back (and sometimes the side) of the bus. The (final) destination of the bus is also stated here. Check this number to make sure you get on the right bus.

  • Information screens on the bus – There is often an information screen on the bus that shows you what the next stop is. This is also announced through the speakers. This way you know when your stop is coming up.

  • Plan your journey before departurePlan your journey in the planner or in the 9292 app. This way, you know which route is the best for your journey.

  • Stay informed during your journey – With the 9292 app, you can also stay informed of delays and changes during your journey.

  • View the live location of the bus – In the 9292 app, you can view the live location of the train, bus, tram, or metro. You will be able to see the current location of the vehicle. This can be useful if there is a delay, or if the screens on the bus are not working.

Stand out in the dark

Is it dark? Make sure you are clearly visible. This way the bus driver knows that the bus has to stop for you. For example, use the light on your phone when you raise your hand.

Types of buses

Buses in the Netherlands have different colours. Each bus operator has its own kind of bus and design. There are different types of buses:

  • City buses - These buses drive in the city and stop often. This is useful if you have to travel short distances, for example from one district to another.

  • Regional buses - These buses drive between cities and villages, stop less often, and drive faster. They often stop at stations where you can transfer to a train or another means of transport.

  • Special buses - There are also special buses such as night buses, which drive at night, or local buses for places where not many people live. Some buses also have to be reserved in advance, such as a dial-a-bus or stop taxi.

Rules on the bus

Are you travelling by bus? Then there are a number of rules that you must adhere to. This way we keep travelling pleasant for everyone. For example, you are not allowed to eat on the bus or put your feet on a seat. Read all the rules that apply on public transport here.
