Latest update: Tuesday 12 March 2024 00:00

On May 4th we remember the Dutch victims of wartime violence, and on May 5th we celebrate our freedom.

If you are travelling with public transport on May 4th at 20:00, you might be standing still for 2 minutes for memorial. On Sunday May 5th there are Liberation Festivals in the country. Travel by public transport, plan your trip and buy your ticket in advance in our 9292 app.

May 4th

If you are travelling with public transport on May 4th at 20:00, you might be standing still for 2 minutes for memorial. The driver of your bus, train, tram, metro or ferry will stop their vehicle when and where it is safe to do so. If you are at a station then you will be asked for 2 minutes of silence.

May 5th

On May 5th we celebrate the fact that we live in freedom. The National Committee helps determine how meaning is given to commemorating and celebrating, and how the memory of the Second World War is kept alive. To celebrate out freedom, every year, no less than 14 Liberation Festivals are organized on May 5th: in every province and in the capital Amsterdam and the court city of The Hague.
