Student Travel Product (Student OV)
The Student Travel Product, also known as Studentenreisproduct or Student OV, is for everyone who follows a vocational, higher professional, or university education, even if you are not yet 18 years old. The Student Travel Product allows you to travel for free based on the type of season ticket. On some days, you will travel with a discount.
Weekday or weekend season ticket
The Student Travel Product is a season ticket that you put on a personal OV-chipkaart. You can choose between a weekday or weekend season ticket.
Please note: You may not be eligible for a Student Travel Product as an international student or non-resident.
Option 1: Weekday season ticket
With a weekday season ticket, you travel for free during the week. That is from Monday 04:00 to Saturday 04:00 (except on public holidays). This also counts for the autumn break, Christmas break, spring break, May break, and on Good Friday.
Travel with a discount
There are also times when you do not travel for free. At these times, you will receive a 40% discount when travelling by train and a 34% discount when travelling by bus, tram, metro, and Waterbus. These discounts apply during the following times:
From Saturday 04:00 to Monday 04:00
On public holidays from 04:00 to 04:00 the following day (even if this public holiday falls on a weekday)
During the summer holiday
Option 2: Weekend season ticket
With a weekend subscription, you travel for free during the weekend. This also counts for the autumn break, Christmas break, spring break, May break, and on public holidays.
Free travel
From Friday 12:00 to Monday 04:00
On public holidays from 04:00 to 04:00 the following day (even if this public holiday falls on a weekday)
From 12:00 on the Thursday before Good Friday, the day before King's Day, the day before Liberation Day, and the day before Ascension Day.
Travel with a discount
There are also times when you do not travel for free. At these times, you will receive a 40% discount when travelling by train and a 34% discount when travelling by bus, tram, metro, and Waterbus. These discounts apply during the following times:
Monday from 04:00 to 04:00 on Tuesday
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 09:00 to 04:00 the following day.
Friday from 09:00 to 12:00
During the summer holiday
Travel at full fare
Tuesday to Friday from 04:00 to 09:00.
Good to know
During the summer holiday, you will not travel for free with either subscription. Instead, you will receive a discount: 40% discount on the train and 34% discount on the bus, metro, tram, and Waterbus.
So, make sure you always have enough money on your personal OV-chipkaart during that period. Or buy an e-ticket for your trip in the 9292 app.
Validity of the Student Travel Product during holidays
Your Student OV is valid during the autumn break, Christmas break, spring break, and May break.
During the summer period, there are 4 weeks in which the Student Travel Product is not valid. During these 4 weeks, the above-mentioned discount will apply. Both the weekday and weekend season tickets are not valid during these four weeks.
Weekday season ticket
With a weekday season ticket, you travel for free during the autumn break, Christmas break, spring break, and May break.
Please note: If a holiday falls on a weekday, you will not travel for free on that day, you will receive the above-mentioned discount instead.
Weekend season ticket
With a weekend season ticket, you travel for free during the autumn break, Christmas break, spring break, and May break. You also travel for free on public holidays, even if the public holiday falls on a weekday.
Apply for a Student Travel Product
Are you following a vocational, higher professional, or university education? And are you younger than 30 years old when your student finance starts? Then you can apply for a Student Travel Product. This is how you do it:
Apply for a Student Travel Product at studentenreisproduct.nl
Get a personal OV-chipkaart
Link your Student Travel Product to your personal OV-chipkaart. This is possible as soon as you have received a message from DUO that the application has been approved.
You can link your Student Travel Product to your personal OV-chipkaart in 'Mijn omgeving' (top right of the website) at studentenreisproduct.nl. Then, follow the steps.
Please note – Do you have other discounts or season tickets on your personal OV-chipkaart? Do not forget to (temporarily) stop them. Or put them on another OV-chipkaart. Then you know for sure that you do not have to pay unnecessarily for your trip.
How long am I entitled to the Student Travel Product?
The period of use depends on your level of education.
MBO level 1 or 2 (vocational education)
There is no maximum on the number of years you can use your Student Travel Product. This changes once you progress to an MBO level 3 or 4 education.
MBO level 3 or 4 (vocational education)
This is calculated in two different ways:
Are you starting a level 3 or 4 education for the first time? From that moment on, you are entitled to a Student Travel Product for 7 years.
Are you starting a new education at level 3 or 4? And did you already use the Student Travel Product during your previous education? These months are then included in the calculation.
For example, have you already done another level 3 education for 2 years and are you now starting a new level 3 education? Then these 2 years are deducted from the 7 years. In this case, you are still entitled to the Student Travel Product for 5 years.
HBO or university
In general, HBO and university students are allowed to use the Student Travel Product for a maximum of 5 years. Does your study last longer than 5 years? Then you may be entitled to the Student Travel Product for a longer period.

(Almost) finished studying?
Are you almost finished or going to stop your education, or is your right to the Student Travel Product expiring because the maximum term has expired? Then there are a number of points you need to pay attention to.
Cancelling your student travel product
It is important that you cancel your Student Travel Product on time. If you do not do this and continue to travel with it, you will receive a fine of up to €313.16 per month. You can cancel your Student Travel Product at a ticket machine that can read an OV-chipkaart.
Scan the OV-chipkaart that holds the Student Travel Product (season ticket).
Click on 'Cancel product'
Then follow the steps on the screen.
Paying for public transport again
Has your Student Travel Product expired and have you cancelled it? Then you need to take the balance of your OV-chipkaart into account.
With the Student Travel Product, you only need a minimum of €10 credit to be able to check in for the train.
Without the Student Travel Product, you need a minimum of €20 on your OV-chipkaart to be able to check in for the train.
You need a minimum of €4 on your OV-chipkaart to be able to check in for the bus.
Discount for graduates at NS
Have you graduated? Or have you paused or ended your education? Then NS has a gift for you. You can use the NS off-peak season ticket for a year after you have graduated or paused or ended your education. This gives you a 40% discount on travel during off-peak hours, weekends, and public holidays. You can request this from NS up to 6 months after cancelling your student travel product.
