Nationwide public transport strike on Wednesday 9 September

FNV has announced a nationwide public transport strike. The strike will take place on Wednesday 9 September 2026 and will last 24 hours.

Below, we provide the latest information we receive from public transport operators. We will add and update information as soon as more details become available.

NS

On Wednesday 9 September, no NS trains will operate in the Netherlands all day.

The Airport Sprinter between Amsterdam Central, Schiphol, and Hoofddorp will operate four times an hour.

NS expects to resume the regular schedule on Thursday 10 September.

NS International

The following international trains will not operate on Wednesday 9 September:

  • EuroCity and EuroCity Direct

  • Eurostar

  • ICE

  • Nightjet

  • Regional train between Roosendaal - Antwerp

  • Three Country Train between Liège - Aachen

GVB

The strike at GVB starts on Wednesday 9 September at 4:00 AM. No metros, trams, or buses will operate. The ferries on the IJ and the North Sea Canal will not operate either.

All ferries on the North Sea Canal, IJ ferry F3, and night buses will resume operating on Thursday 10 September at 12:30 AM.

GVB will operate according to the normal timetable again on Thursday 10 September at 4:00 AM.

HTM buses and trams will not operate from Wednesday 9 September at 4:00 AM until Thursday 10 September at 4:00 AM.

  • No trains are running between Zwolle and Enschede all day.

  • No trains are running between Zwolle and Kampen all day.

Train (RRReis)

  • No trains are running between Amersfoort and Ede-Wageningen all day.

Bus

  • Fewer buses are running in Almere (allGo). Expect cancelled trips and delays. The community bus is running according to schedule.

  • Fewer buses are running in the Utrecht Buiten region (U-OV). Expect cancelled trips and delays. The community buses are running according to schedule.

Transdev/Connexxion

The regular timetable is suspended, resulting in fewer to no bus transport. Frequency depends on driver availability. Expect cancelled trips and delays.

Qbuzz

Qbuzz currently reports that fewer buses will be operating in the regions Drechtsteden, Molenland & Gorinchem (DMG), South Holland North, and the provinces of Groningen, Fryslân, and Drenthe. Bus transport will depend on the availability of drivers and traffic controllers.

Why is this temporary strike happening?

The trade union is protesting against the cabinet's plans to cut funds on social security and pensions. The FNV states that the reason for the strike applies not only to public transport employees, but to everyone in the Netherlands.
