Age discounts

Seniors (65+) and children up to and including 11 years of age are entitled to an age discount. There are special discount products for students.

Senior discount

Are you 65+? Then you can travel with a 34% discount on the bus, tram, and metro. You do not need a season ticket for this. You can use this discount in two ways:

  • Personal OV-chipkaart – The discount is automatically calculated when you check in and out during your trip. This discount starts on the day you turn 65.

  • OVpay – With OVpay, you can now also use an age discount.

Tip – Many public transport companies have special travel products for people aged 60 and over. These allow you to travel with a discount on public transport. Check out our season ticket guide for an overview of these discount products.

Children up to 11 years old

Children up to and including 3 years old always travel for free on public transport. They do not need to check in or out.

The following applies to children aged 4 to 11 years old:

  • Children (4 to 11 years old) travel with a 34% discount on the bus, tram, and metro.

  • The child needs a personal OV-chipkaart for this. The discount is automatically calculated when checking in and out.

  • Or travel with an age discount using OVpay.

Tip – Some operators allow children to travel for free with a paying adult. Check the operator's website before departure for more information.

Travel for free on the train with the Kids Vrij season ticket

Do you want to travel by train? Children up to and including 11 years of age travel for free with a paying passenger aged 12 or older. Apply for the Kids Vrij season ticket for this. You can put this subscription on a personal OV-chipkaart (in the child's name).

This season ticket is free and also applies to trains from other operators.

Young people and students

For pupils aged 12 to 18, there are various discount products available on public transport. You can use this to travel to school or to family and friends. These discounts and season tickets can be purchased from various public transport companies. You can see an overview of these products in our season ticket guide.

Are you travelling with NS International?

Young people up to and including 25 years old will receive a discount when booking a ticket. For this, you must state your age when booking a ticket via the NS International website. The discount will then be automatically calculated.

Student Travel Product

Are you a student at a vocational school (MBO), higher professional school (HBO), or university? Then you are probably entitled to the Student Travel Product. With this, you travel for free during certain parts of the week. When you travel for free depends on the type of season ticket you choose: a weekend or a weekdays season ticket.

Season tickets

Are you outside of these age groups? Don't worry. You can still get a discount on public transport. To do this, take out a season ticket that best suits your age and travel style. You can see an overview of all discount products in our season ticket guide.

Age discount with a debit or credit card

Do you always check in with your debit or credit card? You can link an age discount to your card. Read how to do that below.

Are you under 12 or over 65? Then you can travel with a 34% discount on the bus, tram, and metro. Age discounts can be added via the OVpay app.

  1. Download the OVpay app.

  2. Create an account.

  3. Add your debit card to your account. Read how that works here.

  4. Press 'Add age discount' and follow the steps in the app.
