5 tips to celebrate King's Day in the Netherlands
On 26 April 2025, the Netherlands celebrates the King's birthday: King's Day. Are you celebrating King's Day or King's Night this year? Public transport will bring you from your home to your party!
1. Do what locals do
The Dutch love their traditions on King's Day. Most people will eat an orange tompouce with their coffee in the morning, go to a party with friends during King's Night and will visit one of the many flea markets ("vrijmarkt") in the early morning of King's Day.
Most people will bring their own drinks and snacks if they go to a party on the streets in the city. Beware; for some street parties, they won't allow you to bring your own drinks. Always check the website of the city you're visiting to be sure.
2. Visit one of the bigger cities
Amsterdam is famous for King's Day, but it also gets extremely crowded with tourists. Do you want a more authentic experience? Visit cities like Utrecht, Leiden or Haarlem. These cities also have great parties and markets on King's Day and King's Night. Utrecht, Haarlem, and Leiden are easy to travel to by train.
3. Travel by public transport
During King's Day and King's Night, most city centers will be closed for traffic. Public transport will still be running (sometimes with alternative routes), and most public transport providers even offer a special King's Day timetable. Which means more buses, longer trains and even additional trains on some routes.
All the extra buses and longer trains can be found in the 9292 planner. Plan your trip in the 9292 planner or in the 9292 app. Make sure to check your journey just before departure to avoid surprises.

5. Wear orange coloured clothing
Last but not least: don't forget to wear orange clothes or accessoires. Orange is the national colour of the Netherlands. Embrace it and the Dutch will embrace you!
King's Day usually is celebrated on 27 April. This year, 27 April is a Sunday. Therefore, it's celebrated on 26 April. King's Night will be celebrated on 25 April.
