Step into history: 5 walking routes past regional museums
Discover the surroundings and history of Utrecht. These five walks take you past surprising views and historic locations. Want to learn something new? Combine your walk with a museum visit.
Travel to and from your walk by public transport. Prefer travelling by car? Some of these routes do not end at the same point as they start in. You can travel by public transport between the end point and starting point.

The Canals and Wharves of Utrecht (2,6 km)
During this walk, you will discover all kinds of stories about the medieval architecture and rich trading history of the city of Utrecht. Get to know Utrecht’s canals, wharves, and wharf cellars.
Museum tip:
DOMunder
This 2.6-kilometre walk is circular. It starts and ends at the VVV Utrecht tourist office on Domplein, close to DOMunder. Walk from Utrecht Centraal to Domplein, or take the bus or a shared bicycle.

Rondje Schippersdorp Vreeswijk (5 km)
Vreeswijk is one of the most beautiful areas in Nieuwegein. In Vreeswijk, history comes to life in an interactive walk that is fun for both young and old. Walk past locks, old shipyards, and enjoy stories about life on the water.

This walk is 5 kilometres long and circular. It starts and ends at Fort Vreeswijk.

Jufferpad between Renswoude and Veenendaal (16 km)
During this walk, you will experience how nature and history go hand in hand. Walk past country estates, forts, and castles on this Klompenpad (clog path) trail. Admire defensive structures made of earth and stone, as well as locks and bunkers.

Museum Veenendaal
This walk is either 16 or 14 kilometres long and circular. It starts and ends at the Grebbelinie Visitors Centre. Cycle or walk from Veenendaal-De Klomp station to the starting point.
Prefer a shorter walk? Walk from the Grebbelinie Visitors Centre to Renswoude and take the bus back to Veenendaal-De Klomp station.
Plan your journey to the starting point of the walkPlease note – From March 15 to July 15, part of the route is closed. During this period, you will follow a shortened 14 km route.

Kromme Rijn path between Utrecht and Wijk bij Duurstede (29 km)
Walk along the Kromme Rijn and enjoy nature. You will pass orchards, country estates, and even UNESCO World Heritage sites: the Roman Limes and the Dutch Water Lines. Want to learn more about the Water Lines? Visit the museum.

Is 29 km a bit too far? You can also divide the route into smaller sections. For example, walk from Utrecht to Odijk or from Odijk to Wijk bij Duurstede.
This route runs from one city to another. Travel back to the starting point by public transport or return home directly from the endpoint.

Hollandse IJssel path between IJsselstein and Gouda (37km)
Walk through the polders, along towpaths, and past medieval towns such as IJsselstein, Montfoort, and Oudewater. Do you enjoy birdwatching? Then this route is perfect for you! Along the way, there are also plenty of beautiful museums where you can dive into history.

Is 37 km a bit too far? The route is divided into separate stages of around 11 km each. This allows you to start or end in one of the villages along the way, so you can enjoy the beautiful surroundings at a relaxed pace.
This route runs from one city to another. Travel back to the starting point by public transport or return home directly from the endpoint. You can choose where along the route you want to start or finish.
